Step back in time and experience an adventure through music history by exploring music from Aristotle (Greeks) to Bruno Mars (today). Composers such as J. S. Bach, Beethoven, W.A. Mozart, Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Paul McCartney, and others will be discussed. From this class you will get an overview of European musical traditions, world music, and popular music. You will learn by listening to popular music from many different eras, participate in class discussions, interactive lectures, and reading classic music literature.
Music Theory

Discover how to unlock the mysteries of how music works. This course is designed to provide you with the fundamental knowledge to understand musical structures such as tone, harmony, and rhythm. You will also become very familiar with notation, scales, key signatures, music terminology, intervals, chords and how to write music. You will apply your new theoretical music skills by analyzing both familiar and new musical styles. Music writing software and previous music knowledge is not needed.
Drumming Class

Remember banging on pots and pans as a little kid? Did you love it? Would you like to keep doing it? With just a pair of sticks and a practice pad you can get started. That’s right…you don’t even need a drum. You will learn how to play world percussive rhythms from Brazil, West Africa, Cuba, and other countries. In addition, American rudimental drumming traditions will serve as a core for developing musical understanding, speed, accuracy and technique. Fundamental drum set grooves will also be taught. In this course you will explore a variety of percussive traditions and make your own percussion instrument.
Jazz is America’s music! Great musicians like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others played, lived and loved Jazz. In this course, you will investigate jazz’s origins beginning with African-American folk music, marching band, blues and ragtime. You will also explore multiple jazz styles such as Dixieland, swing, bebop, cool jazz, fusion, Latin jazz and more. You will experience this exciting musical style by listening to jazz works, class discussions, interactive lectures, and reading classic jazz literature.

Is your inner Mozart screaming to get out? Have a song that you want to make a reality? In this class you will create, write, and play your own music. Musical creations will be formed by using technology, hand written notation, and your voice. You will experience a broad range of music from many great composers to serve as compositional models. This will include composers from various cultures, historical and intellectual traditions. No formal musical training required.
